ALIA Library Technician Research award

Nominate now for the Library Technician Research Award (previously known as the Dunn and Wilson). The Library Technician Research Award provides the recipient/s with an opportunity to undertake a particular project of relevance to the role of library technicians in the broad library and information profession. The award proposal can be made by an individual financial library technician member or a group of financial library technician members.
The deadline for this award is 1 June 2009.

The organising committee of the ALIA 2009 National Library & Information Technicians Conference is pleased to announce that Earlybird registration is now open. The 2009 ‘Tecs Conference’ offers five days of networking and learning opportunities. The pre-conference program commences Monday with satellite events, Tuesday offers a full day of library tours of best practice sites and in the evening delegates are invited to the Welcome Cocktail party. This is an opportunity to meet old and new friends and to explore the trade exhibition featuring the latest library industry vendors have to offer. First time delegates are not forgotten, you are invited to join your colleagues for an informal dinner after the cocktail party.
The conference program commences on Wednesday and the next three days will provide a forum to hear local, national and international speakers, to attend a variety of workshops and to enjoy a range of social activities.

Moving into Supervision
Supervisory Skills for library technicians and/or newly qualified professionals
Invest in your career and develop or upgrade your supervisory skills. In this course new information professionals & library technicians will gain an understanding and appreciation for key principles and methods of effective supervision of staff in any type of library or information service.
At the end of this course, participants will:
· Understand the characteristics of effective supervision as it specifically relates to library and information services.
· Identify and utilise specific techniques when supervising the performance and personal development of staff within their own library or information context.
· Describe the main processes required for interviewing, setting performance goals, and evaluating staff performance.
· Develop personal strategies to enable them to plan effectively, manage time, direct, train and motivate staff.
· Engage with fellow participants in discussing issues connected with the supervision of library and information service staff.

Are you currently evaluating where you are with your career in the library and information sector? Are you looking to find some strategies to change or develop your career? Dr. Gilliam Hallam (http://www.herdsa.org.au/?page_id=65) from the School of Information Systems at QUT is coming to Canberra and will be providing an overview of the state of the library and information management sector, as well as sharing some insights into the career development experiences of previous and current library and information workers. Another focal point for the day’s activities will be on personal review/analysis at the individual level in regards to progressing one’s career development. The workshop has value for all work levels, from library students to people in management positions.

We are delighted that Senator Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, and Parliamentary Secretary Assisting the Prime Minister for Social Inclusion, will open the Summit.

ALIA NSW Library Technicians Group is running another “Leadership for Library Technicians” workshop on Saturday, 4th April, 2009 due tato continued demand.
The objective of the workshop is to provide participants with knowledge of power within organisations, leadership styles and ways that can bring out your leadership potential.
Venue: Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy Training Centre, Lawson Street, Eastwood, Sydney (opposite Brush Farm Park).
